We left on Bastille Day after observing part of the festivities. Unfortunatley, the town was a lot like Dunnville - cute for a while, but it didn't take long to figure out that there wasn't much going on. We figured that we'd rather have the extra day in Newfoundland and cut our losses in France.
It was about a 4 hr drive to the Whale Watcher B+B in Witless Bay, our next stop. We got off the ferry, and called ahead to our B+B to ask if there was any chance we could check in a day early. It was with some small trepidation that we called, as we had noticed that their website was down, and upon Googling them, we found out that the place is for sale. Uh-oh. Alas, everything was fine, and yes, we could check in a day early.
We got to Witless Bay, and started looking for signs. None. We looked up the address... no property or house number... just "Main Road." *sigh* We asked a couple of places and got pointed in a couple of different directions. We were hungry and tired, and just wanted to check in. Neither set of directions was very helpful. I saw a "for sale" sign off the road we were on, and that sign had the same last name in the email address as the person I booked with. I thought for sure that might be it. I followed the gravel driveway down a very steep slope towards the ocean and arrived at a house. Nope. The kind gentleman pointed me in yet another direction, and we started up his driveway... and spun our tires about 2/3 of the way up on the loose gravel. I backed up, gunned it, and barely made it up. Nice. It turns out that the directions he gave were to a B+B, but not the one we were looking for. Someone who was checking in let us use their phone (no Fido service practically *anywhere* in NL). It turns out, the Whale Watcher was not, in fact in the town of Witless Bay. It overlooked Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, but was, in fact, in an even smaller town up the road called Tors Cove. After about 20 minutes, we arrived, and checked in.
On a recommendation, we drove yet another 20 minutes down the road to what was probably the last open restaurant anywhere within a half hour drive. It was the Riverview Restaurant, and despite being after 8:30 pm, they were not only open, but still busy. I had a moose burger, the kids had fish and chips, and Jacqui had nachos. We headed back, glad to have the extra day in Newfoundland, and called it a night after a very long day.
