Day 18 - St. Johns

On the 16th, we went to St. Johns, after we went to Cape Spear and Signal Hill. There were alot of hills, and rows and rows of beautiful, bright houses and old buildings. It was gorgeous there!! We walked around where the houses were for a while, then decided to go downtown.

Downtown St. Johns looked quite a lot like the less busier part of downtown Hamilton, just a bit nicer, and it was by the harbor. We wandered around the streets and popped into gift shops to try and find a cup and saucer with Newfoundlands provincial flower, the pitcher plant, on it. It took a few gift shops, but we eventually found one! We also saw a man playing the accordion, and there were bricks with peoples names on them, and dates, which people had bought, beginning somewhere in the early 1900's, and seemingly ending in 1999.

Since mom and dad needed a coffee, we went to a coffee shop called Hava Java, which had a sign in it that said 'Unattended children will be given an espresso and a free kitten!" (I want a free kitten :c) and apparently served tasteless coffee. There was also a candy shop on that street, called the Freak Lunchbox, and we went there.
In front of the Freak Lunchbox was one of those cardboard cutouts with the hole cut in them so you could put your face in the hole and take a picture. This one was a cartoon fish with its mouth wide open, and you put your face where its mouth should be! Mom had one rule about the candy shop; choose your dignity, or candy. We all chose candy, and got our pictures taken with the fish.

Inside the candy shop was simply AMAZING. It had lots of candy, and also things like: cupcake flavored toothpaste, 'Liquid Marijuana in a miniature bottle!!' (Not really, it was mouth spray, but there were lots of little bottles of it that said things like that, and like 'instantly understand your husband!' It was pretty funny), and GIANT mustache stickers. We all (me, Gracie, Michaela, and mom [dad was in a music store]) settled for a bag of candy. I got a lot of chocolate stuff, Michaela got a lot of gummies and caramels, Gracie got a lot of gummies, and mom also got an assortment of gummies, two of each, one of each for her, and one of each for dad.
(I also had a mini freak out over a giant pack of Curly Wurlys... -.-)

After the Freak Lunchbox, we very briefly went to George Street, which had lots of bars, and was basically equivalent to Hess Village. It wasn't very interesting...

Pics here.  We'll add the St. John's pics later.

  1. LOL! ... an espresso AND a free kitten! obviously their sense of humour outshone the coffee! tee hee!

St Johns sounds like such a beautiful place to visit, as all of Newfoundland appeared to be, from the photos I've seen!

That candy shop must have been amazing, Esme! as well as humourous!
    (what are Cruly Wurlys?)

We must see that pic of y'all with the fish! :-)
